2013 marks 20 years of this much-loved fundraising event, which has raised almost $110 million since its inception in 1993. recent studies have found that more than 61,000 australian lives have been saved since 1993, this equates to 8 lives every day over the last 20 years.

one in two australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. look around the room you are in, that’s a scary stat. every 12 minutes, someone in australia dies from cancer and about 13,140 people will die from the disease this year.

as a direct result of cancer council nsw funding there has been a 19% improvement in five year survival rates across all cancers combined in the last 20 years. that’s a great reason to join in and have a cuppa on wed 22nd may.

let’s look at some of the other significant advances:

dr megan chircop at the children’s medical research institute is investigating a new class of drugs that could potentially be used to treat brain cancer. these new drugs, dynamin inhibitors, interfere with cancer cell division and have reduced mouse brain tumours by more than 80% with limited side effects.

dr kathy willowson’s work at university of sydney is breaking new ground in liver cancer diagnosis and treatment. the cutting edge therapy is microspheres – tiny radioactive particles that find their way into the liver and deliver precise doses of radiation to help destroy tumours.

congratulations to megan & craig on their beautiful byron bay wedding, held at the byron beach cafe last month. the wedding was an elegant affair with the couple married on the deck overlooking the pacific ocean and surrounded by twinkling candles, friends and family. the beachfront setting inspired the refined menu with over 60 guests enjoying a selection of seafood canapés and dishes including cajun soft shell crab taco, marinated bean sprouts and salmon roe, tuna tartare with lemon and chilli on crostini and salt & szechuan pepper calamari. the guests also had their photo taken in a polaroid photo booth with a vintage inspired backdrop including old ornate gilt frames and a magnificent cane peacock chair. inspiring couple and wedding. congratulations megan and craig.

gay couples say ‘i do’ in byron bay

Marriage equality proposal sees Council say ‘We do’

At the risk of sounding cliche, ‘love is in the air’ and Byron Shire Council has opened it’s arms to same sex couples who would like to be married within the Shire.

At yesterday’s Ordinary Meeting, the Council declared itself a supporter of marriage equality. As a result, Council will now be providing a symbolic Byron Shire Certificate of Marriage when requested for same sex marriage ceremonies within the Shire.

Mayor Simon Richardson said Council wanted society to know that the Shire supports marriage equality and that this loving union is recognised, respected and validated.

“Whilst it may be symbolic, we have an opportunity to lead within Australia and it’s time to take a stance.

“Locally when residents are being discriminated against, we need speak out and support them. There are times to take a principled stance and this is one of them,” Mayor Richardson said.

Along with the marriage certificate, Council will also consider a ‘Love Garden’ where by a tree is planted in a public space to record and celebrate a same sex marriage within Byron Shire.

Mayor Richardson said the park could become a symbol of the community’s expression for inclusion and support for marriage equality.

“There no greater symbol of love, than a tree. It is beautiful to observe and be near, it grows and changes, it blossoms and is watered by tears and laughter.

“Commitment to a relationship is not easy. They require tenacity, flexibility and strong will. Trees too require these attributes to survive,” he said.

Councillor Paul Spooner also told the gallery that Council has a responsibility to look after the community.

“One of the biggest risks to young people in regional communities is feelings of alienation that comes with being gay. These feelings can contribute to youth suicide.

“This is one small way in which we can support gay people and let them know they are embraced in our community,” Cr Spooner said.

The Mayor or another Council representative will present the symbolic marriage certificate at the ceremony if requested and if availability permits. The costs for the registry and certificate will be paid for by the recipients.

Byron Shire Council will also create a Proclamation of Local Government Support for Marriage Equality and will write to all Local Government Areas in Australia, invite them to co-sign the proclamation. The community will be invited to contribute text for the proclamation and upon the completion of the co-signing, it will be forwarded to the Prime Minister.

Council will also create a Mayors for Marriage Equality group and write to all Local Government Mayors in Australia, inviting them to join the group and input into ways to formalise and develop this collaboration.

nearly 100 guests gathered mid-afternoon at the byron beach cafe to be transported up to the iconic byron bay lighthouse for the fairytale byron bay wedding of johanna and marc. this delightful couple decided to marry on the highest easternmost point of australia at dusk. our dedicated weddings team decorated the space near the lighthouse cottage with tree lights, a love sign and white balinese styled flags. ceremony music by a guitarist added to this romantic and picturesque scene. after the 3.30pm ceremony, guests enjoyed champagne whilst mingling and enjoying the beautiful location and stunning views. guests were transported back to the byron beach cafe to revel in the music of local dj beaver. upon the arrival of the bride and groom, guests were seated and enjoyed a festive three course meal which included delicate seared rare lamb, yellow fin tuna and organic chicken. a big hit was the range of desserts on offer and especially the lavender ice cream! whimsical and personal touches included hand rolled name places, flowers in vintage mason jars and lanterns on every table. candles twinkled and glowed throughout. the photo booth was also popular and a lot of fun. everyone joined in the dancing until it was time to wave this radiant couple goodbye. we wish marc and johanna every happiness in the future.

in a beautiful sunset byron bay wedding on clarkes beach, diana and shane were married in front of over 50 beloved family and friends. guests then made their way to the byron beach cafe, a short walk up the beach, to enjoy welcoming champagne and to mingle on the deck which was magical lit up with lanterns and the music of the renee simone band. as the bride and groom joined their guests, canapés, plates of oysters and individual mini wagyu beef burgers with beetroot relish and pickles were served. everyone was then seated to fully enjoy the main meals which included fresh barramundi and roast lamb. the byron beach cafe was transformed with a beach wedding theme including candles, flowers, shells on all the tables and personalized napkin rings as a memento to each guest. the decadent and delicious wedding cake, courtesy of the bride’s sister, was cut and served as dessert canapés with cream. speeches were made and everyone laughed and cried as it should be. a surprise burlesque performance was particularly memorable and got everyone up and dancing to dj renee. all too soon it was time to farewell this fun loving couple after an especially memorable wedding. we wish them love and happiness in their marriage.

after getting married in brunswick heads, one of many delightful settings for a byron bay wedding, marc and tegan and their 75 treasured guests made their way to byron beach cafe for an outstanding wedding reception. bali lights had been set up at the entrance and guests were able to mingle in the park while enjoying a dishes of tempura king prawns, peking duck pancakes and vietnamese rice paper roll. after throwing the bouquet and cutting the cake, a magnificent confection of red velvet, hazelnut chocolate and hummingbird cake, guest were ushered to their seats. all the while, josh boots kept the live music playing in a style seamlessly mirroring the tone of the day. some lovely touches included masses of flowers, napkins tied with twine and nametags, menus in frames and carefully chosen australian wines. guests could choose from three main meals including tender shoulder of lamb and delectable atlantic salmon. after many moving and heartfelt speeches by the bride and groom and significant family members, dancing commenced until time came for this lovely couple to depart. with a toss of the garter, they were off to start their wonderful life together. we wish them all the happiness in the world.

the byron beach cafe had the pleasure of coordinating the recent byron hinterland wedding of elly and daniel, who declared their love at a sumptuous garden party themed wedding at ‘verandahs’ in coorabell. lights twinkled in the trees, on the tables and throughout the venue. whilst the happy couple enjoyed their romantic 5.30 ceremony, the dining area of ‘verandahs’ was transformed and food and drink prepared. when the couple had completed their vows, the party got under way. drinks were served to the accompaniment of josh boots and his band and guests had time to mingle and absorb the beautiful hinterland views. delicious canapés were served under huge trees before all enjoyed the gourmet bbq. byron beach cafe staff were on hand to assist guests as they helped themselves to dishes including lamb, pork and fresh fish. nothing was compromised and the food was of the same exceedingly high standard of excellence as if prepared at byron beach cafe. for dessert, elly and daniel chose sweet canapés.

a truly unique and beautiful wedding. we thank elly and daniel for allowing us to be part of their big day and wish them every happiness.

fun and romantic byron bay wedding

rebecca and alex celebrated their love with a fun and romantic reception at byron beach cafe after an emotional wedding ceremony in the byron bay catholic church. overlooking the ocean, guests mingled on the lantern lit deck whilst enjoying our amazing beach paella appetizer and listening to local band ‘kurtis’. the elegant themed wedding continued as guest made their way into the dining room which was bathed in sparkling candlelight and a profusion of beautiful flowers to enjoy a three course meal. dessert was a triumphant and decadent ‘chocolate tower’ served with fresh cream and coulis. meal over, ‘kurtis’ unleashed their big, fresh disco sound and everyone was up and dancing the night away. we wish rebecca and alex every happiness in their new married life and congratulate them on their spectacular wedding.
